Although the SAIEA Calabash Website focuses on providing the Southern African community with EIA and public participation resources and information, much of the available resources and information were generated internationally. However, most are universally applicable or at least contain good guidelines or principles to go by. Therefore, this part of the site contains numerous web links to guidelines, manuals, useful resources, case studies, training courses and contact organisations worldwide. Click on any of:

Public Participation Guidelines back to the top

Public participation is conducted all over the world as an avenue for citizens to participate in decision-making. There are many public participation guidelines available worldwide. Below, we provide just a sample of the more recent ones. Each has a slightly different slant, illustrating that there is no blue-print public participation process. Different things work for different people under different circumstances. Some guidelines are specific to EIA or other focus areas, others are generic. Where possible, we have grouped the guidelines.

Also remember to look under the Africa, SADC or country categories for guidelines, and to look under Resources for tips, methods and other useful resources, and also to look under Case Studies for practical applications.

Almost every country has its own EIA guidelines and laws or regulations. There are also many generic EIA guidelines available. Below, we provide just a sample of the more recent ones.
