Capacity Development and Linkages for Environmental Impact Assessment in Africa - At this year's annual IAIA conference in Stavanger Peter Tarr chaired the CLEAA day. It was attended by 150+ people from many countries, both within and outside Africa. We have never before had such a good response at a CLEAA meeting. The core group of African EA practitioners that started CLEAA has grown considerably over the years. The broadening of the CLEAA base is essential if this is to become the pan-African network that is envisaged. Even though we find ourselves re-explaining the history to newcomers at every CLEAA meeting, we realise the importance of maintaining an all-inclusive approach that welcomes new “members” and provides information to them.

Cleaner Production Training - three of the scoping reports for this project have been submitted to the client. These include a plastic packaging company, a vehicle repair workshop and a cereal factory. Two further scoping reports are in progress, these are: a natural beauty SME and a sweets factory. All relevant scoping reports will be finalized during July 2006.

Kudu Integration - SAIEA submitted the final Kudu Integration report to the client recently, for more information please visit http://www.nampower.com.na/2005/pages/kudu-gas.asp .

IAIA 2006 - SAIEA would like to take this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge the support received by IAIA. As always, IAIA provides excellent opportunities for people to meet each other and exchange views. Furthermore, it was encouraging to see the extent to which the posters on display at IAIA have improved in leaps and bounds compared to those seen at earlier IAIA conferences. However, it appears that the increasing use of computer graphics and expensive materials will disadvantage people from developing countries who simply do not have the resources to produce professional looking displays. It was encouraging that some developing country entries won awards for their posters.

Trekkopie Mine - First partner meetings have commenced at SAIEA's head office. We are of the opinion that an SEA for the area should be prepared as there are a number of companies now prospecting for, or mining uranium in a relatively small area. Cumulative impacts are likely to occur.
